One of the highlights of any school residential or outdoor activity day is the opportunity for students to tackle team challenges together. These activities are designed to encourage communication, cooperation and problem-solving while keeping students active and engaged.

At Redrock Outdoor in Exmouth, our team-building challenges push students to think creatively, support each other and work as a group to overcome obstacles.

Here are five of the most popular team-building games students love.

1. The Swamp Crossing Challenge

This is one of our most exciting multi-stage teamwork challenges.

Students must work together to cross an imaginary swamp using a series of increasingly difficult obstacles. The challenge begins with a slack line entry, requiring balance and teamwork just to access the course.

From there, teams must carefully guide each other through the Spider’s Web, navigating rope gaps without touching the strands. Once through, they face the Commando Crawl, working low to the ground to manoeuvre under a rope obstacle.

The final stage requires students to complete a stepping stone and plank crossing, using limited equipment to safely move the entire team across the swamp.

The challenge requires planning, communication and cooperation throughout.

Skills developed:

Communication and leadership

2. Elevated Water Transportation Challenge

This challenge quickly turns students into engineers.

Teams must transport water from one container to another using pipes and connectors, creating a functioning pipeline system. However, there is a catch. The entire system must be supported above the ground using materials such as bamboo canes and other available equipment.

Students must design, build and adjust their structures to prevent leaks and maintain water flow across the course.

The result is a highly creative challenge where teams experiment, adapt and refine their designs.

3. Wooden Skis and Gutter Ball Challenge

This activity combines two fast-paced teamwork games into one session.

In the Wooden Skis challenge, teams must work together to move across the ground while standing on long wooden skis. The only way to move forward is through coordinated movement and communication between every member of the team.

Students then move on to the Gutter Ball Pipeline, where they must transport a ball across a distance using sections of guttering. The ball must keep moving at all times, meaning the group must constantly reposition themselves to extend the pipeline.

Both activities are energetic, fun and often full of laughter as teams try to keep everything moving smoothly.

4. Slack Line Balance Challenge

Balance, patience and encouragement are key in this challenge.

Students must carefully navigate a slack line while teammates assist with spotting and encouragement. Although the task may appear simple at first, the unstable line requires concentration and teamwork to succeed.

Students often finish the course surprised at how much they relied on each other to succeed.

As the year draws to a close and the camp settles into its winter rhythm, December gives us the perfect moment to pause, look back, and reflect on what has been one of our most rewarding years yet at Redrock Outdoor.

2025 has been a year defined by growth, laughter, muddy boots, new partnerships, and big plans for what comes next.

A Landmark Year with the HAF Programme.

One of the standout milestones of 2025 was becoming an approved provider for the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme. Welcoming children and young people to camp through HAF brought a new energy to the site and allowed us to open the doors of outdoor adventure to families who may not otherwise have had access to these experiences.

From bushcraft and team challenges to archery, games, and shared meals, the HAF sessions were packed with fun, confidence-building, and new friendships. The smiles, feedback, and returning faces told us everything we needed to know, it’s a programme we’re incredibly proud to be part of and one we’re excited to continue developing.

An Outstanding Season of School Residentials.

Our school residential camps once again formed the backbone of the year, and 2025 was one of our strongest seasons to date. Schools travelled to Exmouth Camp from across the region to experience multi-day adventures filled with watersports, bushcraft, problem-solving challenges, evening activities, and unforgettable moments by the coast.

What we’re most proud of is this: every school that visited us in 2025 has already confirmed their return for 2026, with several new schools also joining the Redrock Outdoor family for the first time. That level of trust means everything to us and reflects the dedication of our instructors, the quality of our programmes, and the unique environment the camp provides.

Looking Ahead: Axe Throwing and Winter Projects.

While the waters may be quieter over winter, there’s plenty happening behind the scenes. One of our biggest developments is already underway, the construction of our brand-new axe throwing arena.

Designed to add another exciting, skill-based activity to our programme, the arena will enhance our land-based adventure offering for schools and youth groups alike. It’s an exciting project that reflects our commitment to continually improving the camp and expanding what we can offer our visitors in 2026 and beyond.

Growing the Team for 2026.

As the programme grows, so does the team. Graeme has been busy throughout the winter months interviewing and recruiting new instructors who will be joining us for the 2026 season. We’re passionate about building a team that shares our values, enthusiasm, and commitment to delivering safe, inspiring outdoor experiences, and we’re looking forward to welcoming some fantastic new faces next year.

One of the most rewarding parts of our year is our involvement with the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, a government-funded initiative designed to support children and families during school holidays. Working closely with Devon County Council’s HAF Devon scheme, RedRock Outdoor provides safe, engaging, and inclusive activity days for children aged 8–15.

Our HAF sessions combine fun, friendship, and learning; from team challenges and bushcraft adventures to archery, beach games, and cooking together. Every child receives a healthy meal and takes part in a day packed with laughter, fresh air, and positive experiences. For many, it’s their first taste of outdoor adventure; and the smiles say it all!

We believe that outdoor learning should be for everyone, regardless of background or ability. That’s why inclusivity sits at the heart of everything we do. Our instructors adapt every session to ensure that every participant feels welcome, supported, and confident to join in.

World speed record for windsurfing: The windsurfing speed record is currently held by Antoine Albeau with a speed of 53.49 knots (99.07 km/h), set at the 2024 Lüderitz Speed Challenge in Namibia. This record was achieved on December 1, 2024, according to JP Australia . Jenna Gibson also set a new women's world speed record at the same event, reaching 48.02 knots

Preparing for an Exciting 2025

As winter draws to a close and we look ahead to another exciting season at Red Rock Outdoor Ltd, we wanted to share some of the improvements and developments we've been working on over the past few months. While our activities may slow down in the colder months, our commitment to creating an incredible experience for visiting schools and groups never stops!

Enhanced Security for Peace of Mind

One of the biggest updates to our site is the installation of a brand-new security fence around the property. This not only adds an extra layer of safety but also provides reassurance to parents, teachers, and group leaders. We understand how important it is for schools to know that their students are in a secure environment, and this investment reflects our ongoing commitment to safety and well-being.

Expanding Our Natural Landscape

We’ve been busy planting a huge number of trees across our four camping villages—Willow, Hazel, Mountain Ash, and Elderberry. These trees will enhance privacy between each village, making for a more immersive and peaceful camping experience. Not only will they create natural divisions, but they will also contribute to the overall beauty of the site and encourage local wildlife to thrive.

Of course, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing! The local deer have taken quite a liking to our young saplings, treating them as an all-you-can-eat buffet. While this has posed some challenges, we’re doing our best to protect the trees and ensure they have the chance to grow into a stunning addition to the camp.

More Storage & Fresh New Look

Behind the scenes, we’ve been working on enhancing our storage areas, ensuring we have everything neatly organised and ready to go for the busy season ahead. We’re also giving the dining hall a fresh coat of paint and some extra decorative touches, making sure it’s looking its best for our 2025 visitors.

Exciting New Activities & Instructors for 2025

Extensive planning has gone into making this season better than ever. We have brand-new activities lined up, designed to challenge, excite, and engage our visiting groups. Some are still in development, but we can’t wait to reveal what’s in store soon!

This summer, our Junior Adventure Days at Red Rock Outdoor Ltd got off to an incredible start! The buzz of excitement, laughter, and the thrill of adventure filled the air as kids aged 10-15 immersed themselves in a wide range of outdoor activities. We are proud to see them having an awesome time. Sessions run throughout summer holidays and half terms from 10 am to 3 pm.

For 2025, we have exciting new activities lined up to make these days even more memorable. Watersports will feature paddleboarding, open-top kayaking, mega SUP fun, or snorkelling at the stunning Orcombe Point. And if conditions allow, we’re excited to offer surfing and bodyboarding for those keen to take on the waves!

Land-based adventures are just as thrilling, with options including archery, archery tag. We’re also introducing Survival SOS, an exciting new challenge for 2025 that will put kids' wilderness skills to the test. In this activity, kids will learn the basics of survival, including building shelters, basic first aid, and making a fire using natural materials. We went mobile yesterday to deliver two SUP taster sessions for the members of Lympstone Sailing Club. After the weather proved too windy on previous occasions, it finally came good and the light wind and a bit of sunshine made for great conditions to learn to paddle.

A great place to learn to windsurf

The estuary is shallow and has flat water unless it is North Westerly. It is a tidal location that goes dry at low tide. We plan the courses around the tides and can not teachevery weekend, hence the different dates at different times to make the most of the windsurfing conditions.

Once you have completed the Beginner RYA weekend course it is time to practice your windsurfing. After a few sessions we recommed the intermeduate weekend course. During this course we can focus on tacking an gybing, upwind sailing, harness and bech starts. If it is going really well then we can move onto footstraps and using the harness. After that course come a practice as much as you can. We offer a 4 hire sessions for the price, each session is 3 hours, this is great value.

Once you can deep water start with confidence then you can pretty much windsurf anywhere. It is a great sport and the estuary is the perfect place to start your windsurfing career.

2020 has been a brilliant summer. We taught more paddle boarding, windsurfing and Kayaking than ever before.

The windsurfing went crazy this year with lots of people taking up the sport. The junior club was full all summer. We will post all course dates in the next month and the family package can be arranged for you. The family package means you and your family get your very own coach and you don't have to worry about mixing with other groups. All in the great outdoors, in the beautiful estuary.

School Residential Summer Camps

Summer camp in Bell Tents, what could be more British. We have a large Campsite and can take up to 220 students at a time. We offer really good food for the week, plus an 8-9pm hot chocolate to end the day. During the week each student will Paddle Board, Open Top Kayak, have a go on a Mega SUP, Woodcraft, Team Challenge and the incredibly fun Archery Tag.

Typically you would arrive Monday and depart Friday morning or afternoon depending upon how far you have to travel. We ask that the students bring sleeping bags and pillows, we have the rest covered. We have an OFSTED number especially for safe guarding, please see the bottom of the home web page for all operating procedures, risk assessments, insurances and qualifications, all ready for you to download. Easy.

Another windy day at the Estuary

Another windy day windsurfing at the estuary (duck pond) in Exmouth. The estuary is a blessing for South Coast windsurfers as it is excellent in a North Westerly wind, most place are off shore, Pagham is another good north west venue. The duck pond works really well 2-3 hours before high tide and a couple more after the tide, depending upon the range of the tides and what lows or highs are acting upon it.

On the warm water Orcombe point Exmouth

Last Saturday, I popped to Orcombe to see Dave and the team on the beach. It was a lovely Summer's day with lots of watersports activity at our Orcombe Point centre. What I really liked was the variety of craft out on the water and everyone was having such a lovely day. There were Open top kayaks, Paddle boarders, Windsurfers, kitesurfer and even a wave for some body boarding. It was a great atmosphere on the beach, we ran lots of courses and hired plenty of equipment. So, I took some snaps of the day and some of our students.

Making the most of Summer conditions

For years I have nagged students saying "the more you hold the windsurfing boom the better you get". That seems pretty obvious, but what happens is that as students progress they tend to only windsurf in the strongest winds that they can manage. Typically all the windsurfers come out to play in a force 5 plus.

I have been mixing SUP, SUP surf and Windsurfing which is keeping me pretty fit and getting me on the water. But there is a force 3 hole, bit too windy for a good SUP not so windy for a great sail. Having had a long chat with Farrel (O'shea & Simmer) it was time to chance a Simmer SC Slalom 7.8m, SX8 Carbon Boom and 116 L Monster Slalom machine.

Force 3 and hanging on and charging into gybes fully powered. So, for all the students I've nagged over all the years, I'm now listening to my own mantra and guess what ..... it blew force 5, I was on a 5.3m and my windsurfing, if I say so myself, I was in tune with the equipment and conditions. Summer sailing in a force 3 with the sun beaming down and not a care in the world. whooooo Hoooo - I'm going in a minute as the windy tree has just moved a bit which is now good enough for me to go windsurfing.

Increase the fun, reduce the pain

Far too many years ago, I was skiing with my school group in Italy. On the first day we met our resort rep for the week, who was a friend of the ski company's MD. As a 'favour' for his old friend, he would take two weeks off his usual work and rep for the school groups who came to the resort.

As part of the introductory conversation, we asked if he would like to ski with the staff the following day but he declined, saying he had a ski lesson. We were a bit shocked that someone of his experience was still having lessons, however when we watched him in action with one of the resorts top ski guides, the following day, we all considered booking a lesson ourselves.

His skiing was faultless and looked effortless. Discussing this with him at lunchtime, he said he did the same every year, it was his pre-season 'tune'. The idea has stayed with me ever since. Everyone needs to ensure they learn and maintain good technique in whatever sport. Injuries occur when we rush or become lazy. Having a coach or instructor observing and correcting, reduces the risk of injury, improves performance and most importantly - maximises fun!

So ask yourself:

Did you learn to SUP without a lesson?
Do you get aches and strains during and after your paddles?
Have you fallen behind just how much SUP paddle technique has changed in the last few years?
Do you watch Youtube clips on Stand Up Paddle Boarding and notice huge variation in what the presenters are suggesting?

Yes to any of the above means you could be getting so much more from your time on the water paddling your SUP. So, like the ski rep I described above, book yourself a pre-season 'tune' with us, either in one of our improver sessions or by special arrangement. Our peak school work begins mid-May but we are reasonably flexible until then, week day, evening or weekend.

Orcombe point to Sandy Bay and back

Orcombe point is the UNESCO starting point for the Jurassic coast line. Exmouth is the Triassic section, 250,000 million year old Red Rocks lead to the Jurassic Dorset coast turning Cretaceous by Swanage. Our paddle adventure from Orcombe to Sandy Bay is lovely, the tall cliffs and sandy beaches make an amazing backdrop.
It's a brilliant tour and it is designed for any standard of paddler. Complete beginners can have their lesson first and then, conditions permitting, have an adventure down to Sandy bay. The more experienced paddlers may be rewarded with a wave just past Rodney bay. We also teach at the estuary where there are some enjoyable paddles to Lympstone, Topsham, Starcross and the famous Turf Locks. These paddles are flat water and perfect for improving skills and having a good work out. Dave and I often catch up while having a paddle to Lympstone and back.
Wether you are a group of friends, corporate, hens or stags, these water adventures are a perfect way to enjoy the great outdoors, learning new skills and enjoying some great exercise.

The forecast is looking great for the Easter Bank Holiday weekend after a rather chilly couple of weeks. Light winds and sunshine!

We'll be open for hire and lessons at our Orcombe Point concession, at the eastern end of Exmouth Beach, Good Friday, and Easter Saturday and Sunday from 1000 hrs, with last hire at 1500 hrs.

Flood defence works on the Exe Estuary

Changes to access - Imperial Grounds in Exmouth for 2019

From April to October, The Kier Group will be constructing flood defences on behalf of the Environment Agency in Exmouth. These will be in part on the seafront, close to Mamhead and on the Exe Estuary from MS Marine to part way around the Imperial Grounds.

This will have an impact on the activities taking place in this area, especially for vehicle access for the majority of 2019. The Kier Group have met with most of those concerned and arrangements are being put in place to help ensure local businesses and activities can continue to take place and the enclosed newsletter gives more details.

We have a new online booking system ready for 2019.

We have a new booking online booking system. Choose you sport from the drop down, then pick you date and make your booking, paying online. Very quick and easy, if you want to book more than one person, just repeat without coming out of the booking. It will also let us add tours as and when the weather looks good or the conditions favourable.

Above is a picture of the ladies try hards last Summer, we are delighted that they will be joining us again for more on water adventures. And to all of you Try Hards, there are dates especially for you, just choose the course you wish to join and book yourself in, easy.

We hope that this improvement helps with your booking and makes life much easier for you.

To get things started we've five sessions, which are exclusively for Tri-Hard members and their families. All of these can now be booked and paid for online . Lots more dates to follow!

6.4.19. - 1300 hrs SUP Orcombe Point for a coastal tour , again for the more experienced/improver (16 places)

We have a lodge (sleeps 14), a cottage (sleeps up to 16) and we hire bell tents. The offer below is an example of weekend parties that we arranged this year for hens and stags.

We love our watersports all year round - calm and flat, time to SUP tour, windy, time to windsurf, swell and waves, time to SUP surf! There's always something to do and with modern wetsuits and accessories, there's no excuse not to enjoy what the 'autumn' has to offer.

Hurricane season for those the eastern US might be no fun but by the time those storms have made their way across the Atlantic, the low pressure systems create great windsurfing and surfing conditions.

You can always get warmed up after a cold session in the water but you can't have a great time and create even better memories if you don't get in.

We'll be running SUP and windsurfing lessons throughout September and October for those who want to experience these great activities - just send us an email of check our website for details.

A record season?

The late spring and summer have brought us amazing weather and with it a huge surge in people wanting to get on the water. We've had over 2,400 pupils and students enjoy one of our beach watersports days since May and this doesn't include weekend sessions, private lessons, groups and corporate events.

We continue to be a RYA registered windsurfing training centre, as well as an ever expanding Standup Paddleboarding school with BSUPA. There is also our kayaking and this year's very successful 'Megasups'. These have been used for Dragon boat style races, Supfaris to Lympstone or along the Jurassic Coast as well as a simple platform for jumping into deep water. In fact, this type of activity has kept some of our young people entertained for hours!

Our complimentary activities: Wood Craft, Team Challenge and Archery Tag have all grown, making this one, if not, our most successful Watersports year to date.

A huge thank you to all those who've come along to enjoy the sports we love in one of the best coastal places in the UK. This thanks also extends to the Watersports Team, who have worked long hours, over many days, in very hot weather to ensure the young people taking part have had a safe and highly enjoyable time.

Schools season

We're well into our busiest time of year on the water, with over 50 schools from the UK coming to our centres to enjoy a range of activities.

We run beach days, which include a selection of sports depending upon the conditions of the day but all of which ensure our guests have a great time. Standup Paddleboarding (SUP), our Megasup (can take 8 adults or 10+ children), windsurfing, sit-on kayaking, bodyboarding or surfing are all part of our offer and at the beginning of the school season, local school Bassetts Farm joined us.

As well as a great day on the water (the teachers appeared to have as great a time as the pupils...), year 6 also created some brilliant leaflets as a marketing activity back at school and we're very proud to publish here , two of the best.
Well done to all year 6 for taking part and to Evelyn and Aston!

A hot May - enjoying watersports in Exmouth

May 2018 has been brilliant for teaching windsurfing and paddle boarding with Exmouth Watersports. Most of the beginner sessions have been at the estuary centre, the water is shallow and calm, perfect for learning. We have had a few groups at Orcombe point to tackle the chop or the waves - and some of the wave days have been very enjoyable.

The all new Exmouth Watersports SUP & Windsurf Club !

We’re pleased to announce our new SUP and Windsurf Club Seasonal Membership is now available. Designed to help people have fun, keep fit, meet like minded water sports enthusiasts and improve your skill levels, the membership runs from April to the end of October (unless we’re blessed by some amazing weather) and offers a whole range of benefits and discounts on the whole Red Rock Leisure experience.

Dates for the club are already on our website and once you’re a member, all you need to do is choose when you want to come along, send us an email and we can then ensure there are enough of our team to run the session, as well as enough equipment to meet your skill and experience level.

Windsurfing from 1 knot to 35 knots

How Exmouth watersports strives to get you windsurfing at 35 knots - faster than a seagull

The road to 35 knots was one that we all loved. Giles, Steve, Toby and Andy all agree that we wish we could forget how to windsurf so that we coud learn it all over again. For us learning to windsurf was and is that much fun.

We are blessed with the estuary , it's a great place to learn and develop your skills as you progress from 1 knot to 35 knots plus.

Here are the key stages that we teach.
Lesson 1 Learn to turn the board around and sail along in a straight line - secure position to stand in.

Then lesson 2 Learn to sail upwind and downwind - working a triangular course
Lesson 3 Let's get you around the triangle quickly, time to rail and fast tack.
Lesson 4 Why uphaul a sail? When you can beach start and let's improve railing the board upwind.
Lesson 5 Harness and footstraps plus really good flare gybes
Lesson 6 Driving your board fast, faster and well really fast, water starts.

Lesson 7 waterstarts, fast flat board and carve gybes
Lesson 8 Carve gybes and duck gybes

Jump, wave ride, blast along, back loop and forward loop...... but all that is another story

Our Campsite, Lodge, Holiday cottage and watersports centre

It's not quite the start of Spring we were looking for but it is beautiful.
Here are a few pictures of our windsurfing and SUP centre and the campsite and lodge in the spring. The snow was quite deep and won't be around for long so we grabbed some images. Its so strange, last week in the court yard we were putting new sails together and getting boards ready and needed to wear shorts because it was just so hot due to the baking sun. Roll on Summer 2018.

Here comes the Summer

We are getting ready for this summers fun on the water.

Ok so we don't have many palm trees but we do have an estuary centre and a beach location at Orcombe point. Our centres are quite different, let me explain.
The E stuary is shallow, calm and has flat water perfect for teaching beginners and having relaxed club paddles up the Exe to Lympstone, Topsham, Star cross or the Turf Locks for a cheeky beer. Cheeky beer.
Orcombe point and along to sandy bay has a brilliant paddle along the jurassic coast but, is open sea and many different conditions prevail. Sometimes we get waves, sometimes chop and often Sammy the seal. The paddle to Sandy and back is a great workout but it is for the more experienced paddler.
Windsurfing at Orcombe can be very good. The waves out back can shape up well and you can get a few bottom turns. Back loops are best here because over the sandbar takes too much wind out of sail as the currents can be strong on windy days, but it is unnerving because you are quite a distance from the beach and I am always breaking kit. On a normal day cruising around the bay is idyllic, the back drop of Triassic red cliffs is quite beautiful.
So, as I say, here comes another season of teaching windsurfing, paddle boarding and kayaking and I can't wait for the fun to start. Learn, get fit, have fun in the great outdoors. Why not....
